The bronze head from the "Golyamata Kosmatka" mound

Found be the TEMP 2004 team of the Bulgarian archaeologist Georgi Kitov in September 2004 under a heap of stones, containg also the bottom of a very large clay vessel. According to Kitov the 12-kg head probably comes from a life-size statue. The head had been crudely severed from it at the neck and placed horizontally in a 4-metre deep pit that has been lined with stones so that the pressure of the soil does not damage it. The eyes were additionally covered with gold and silver (plated?). Semi-precious stones had been used in the making of the eyes. Remains of gold plating has been also found at the fore-head.
